What Steph Curry Can Teach Us About Mouthguards

It is no surprise that most high school and middle school sports teams require mouthguards. Mouthguards help to protect teeth and that protection is key when a soccer ball is being kicked at your face, or when an elbow is thrown on the basketball court while grappling for a rebound. It makes a lot of sense that mouthguards are often required gear for athletes.

Golden State Warriors, leading scorer, Steph Curry is pretty fond of wearing his mouthguard. While it is not required in the NBA to wear a mouthguard, you won’t catch Curry on the court without one. Often times you’ll find it in his mouth, but even more often you’ll find it dangling out of his mouth, or see him grasping it in his teeth.

What is the mentality behind this mouthguard routine? Well, it is likely based in stress; being in the NBA finals will do that to you. The use of Curry’s mouthguard as a tool to manifest his stress is a lesson that we can all learn from.

Many people manifest their stress in their mouth. Grinding and clenching teeth while sleeping, or even while awake is rather common. But, it can have serious affects on the teeth. Cracking, chipping, and breaking teeth are all results of grinding and clenching.

If you want to avoid taking your stress out on your teeth, talk to your dentist about taking a page out of Steph Curry’s book. If you grind or clench your teeth, than a mouthguard might be a good option for you. Also ask your dentist about the best mouthguards for sports. Your child might need a unique mouthguard depending on their sport and their teeth.
