Aside from regular check-ups and cleanings, fillings are the most common dental procedure performed in the United States. At Paxton Dental Care in Paxton, MA, we offer tooth-colored fillings to protect and repair your teeth after they sustain damage due to decay or injury. Fillings may be recommended by Dr. Scott Siemen to restore a tooth that has a cavity, restore worn teeth, or even to close teeth gaps or for chipped tooth repair.

What are white cavity fillings made from?

Historically, cavities were typically filled with a silver-colored material called amalgam, which is a mixture of metals that is effective at repairing teeth but can stand out in your smile due to its silver color. Tooth-colored fillings are made from a modern dental material called composite resin. This material is a great choice for many patients because it:

  • Is tooth-colored for a natural appearance
  • Can be shaded to match your other teeth
  • Is durable and long-lasting
  • Is versatile and can be used for many things, from filling cavities to cosmetic changes to your teeth

The process for placing dental fillings

Getting a filling placed only requires one visit to the dentist. If you are getting a cavity filled, we will begin your visit by numbing the area that will be treated so that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Once you are numb, Dr. Siemen removes the decayed area of the tooth to halt the disease progression and sanitizes the area to eradicate the decay-causing bacteria and debris. Then, the composite resin is applied to the tooth layer by layer, using a special curing light in between each layer to harden the material for a strong finish. Once the tooth’s natural shape has been restored through the filling material, Dr. Siemen will shape it and check your bite. After your appointment, you may feel some sensitivity to heat or cold in the area that was treated, but this resolves quickly.
